Vatukacevaceva Village written by Nicolette Loizou, Kent, England October 2005
In case you were interested in getting involved in Fijian Families I thought I’d write a testimonial of my experience. I stayed in a remote mountain village near Rakiraki where goats run free and many locals travel by horse! Even though the village has no electricity or hot running water I still managed to feel comfortable and at ease thanks to the warmth and friendliness of my hosts and the entire villagers. In fact, being a visitor I felt sometimes overwhelmed by the interest I was creating! The children in particular will find you fascinating and will just enjoy watching you so make sure you bring some sweets and small presents for them as they are so excited to see an overseas visitor.
It was a fascinating experience to see life lived the Fijian style such as the preparing and drinking of the kava root, eating on the mat with the hands and generally seeing a village being almost practically self-sufficient thanks to the abundance of produce grown and created within it. Therefore, I would recommend the experience to anyone wishing to see a Fiji that exists beyond the glossy tourist brochures that merely represents the resort islands.
